2013 BWCA - Little Indian Sioux South, Bootleg Lake
In the Fall of 2013 we went on a wonderful Boundary Waters trip. Myself and two tripping buddies went in at Little Indian Sioux South and spent a week by ourselves on Bootleg Lake before heading back the way we came. We had planned on a vigorous trip covering lots of ground and water, but Bootleg was so ideal this particular trip that we decided to stay, until/unless more people moved into the lake. No one came, so we stayed for 7 nights on Bootleg, enjoying pleasant weather and a multitude of frogs, sunsets, and Aurora Borealis.
Top-down view of a classic BWCA fungus. Macro moss. This great stuff is everywhere. Looking out over a drop-off. One tired pooch. Dusky stars reflecting over the water. Preparing for the "Hobo Pie" meal, which consists of these ingredients, cut and divided into aluminum packets, cooked directly in the coals. Subject A Subject B This frog was more than willing to pose for some macro shots. Thanks Frog! Top-down view of this BWCA frog! This island was off our site, and every morning it collected mist from the previous night. My MNII in the morning sunset. This was a point we could see from our site. I was up at sunrise quite a bit, apparently. Some dew in the sunrise, of course. ... This caterpillar had collected quite a bit of dew on himself over night, he looked great in the morning glow. We saw the northern lights a few times this trip. This was from the night they came in most clear. Aurora Borealis serves as a fine backdrop for experiments with glow-sticks and long exposures.

In June 2017 we went on a shorter-than-usual BWCA trip, on account of an incoming little one back home. Myself, Lucille, my brother-in-law, and two friends went to Big Moose Lake by way of Moose River South on a 4 night trip. We saw lots of heavy rain, leaving us to quite a few games of Magic the Gathering. On the upside, we got to see many incredible rainbows, including a full end-to-end double rainbow out over the water. I didn't take the camera out too often on account of the incessant rain Here are some photos from the trip:
The long windy dirt road from Ely to the entry point. Lucille observing the fish holding area. Up-close photo of a bug on a flower. The crew gazing at one of our double rainbows. I don't think Lucille had ever noticed a rainbow before now. A small caterpillar climbing along a tarp line. Evening haze with a post-rain mist; the remnants of a rainbow. Now where the hell are we? What's with all the rain? "Lucille, pose in front of the rainbow for me" There was a pot of gold behind that rock. We paddled out to claim it and split the loot 5 ways.
